Jaxon Castro

Jaxon Castro is a bassoonist, hornist, and composer at Arizona State University. He has been a part of several ASU ensembles including the ASU Wind Symphony, ASU Philharmonia, and the Maroon and Gold Band. Before ASU, he was a member, drum major, and composer for the Queen Creek High School band programs. His musicianship has earned him the Director’s Award as well as positions in the AMEA Regional Band on horn as well as bassoon. As of now, he is currently pursuing a BMUS in Music Composition and hopes to learn as much bassoon and horn as he can along the way.

Alice Lin

Alice Lin is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Supply Chain Management with International Business and Applied Business Data Analytics certificates at Arizona State University. She began to show interest in classical music when she attended the Wind Symphony and Wind Ensemble of Chingshin Academy Middle School, Taiwan. Alice also participated in National Student's Music Contest in high school and won second place.

Although Alice is a non-major student, she is passionate about bassoon and classical music. Being part of the ASU bassoon studio has afforded her many opportunities to perform during college. She currently plays with the ASU Wind Symphony under the direction of Dr. Jamal Duncan. After graduation, Alice will be working as an Operation Analyst in the investing banking industry, but she will continue her music journey as an amateur, playing her favorite instrument.

Aviel Martinez-Mason

Aviel Martinez-Mason is a second-year undergraduate bassoon performance major from Tempe, Arizona. He graduated from Marcos de Niza High School’s Fine Arts Academy in May of 2022. Martinez has participated in 4 regional ensembles and one All-State ensemble.

At ASU, he has performed with the Sun Devil Marching Band, the ASU Wind Symphony, and the ASU Philharmonia. He is unsure of which career to pursue after receiving his degree in bassoon performance, although he is quite interested in playing in pit orchestras. In his free time, he likes to play other instruments and sing. He sang with the Phoenix Children’s Chorus for 10-1/2 years, traveling with them to Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. He also is very interested in learning foreign languages and is fluent in English and Spanish.

Nicholas Muir

Nicholas Muir (freshman) has been from coast to coast and Alaska in his lifetime. He has seen and been a part of a lot of different organizations such as Vietnam group whose purpose was to build and restore Vietnam-era aircraft and helicopters. He also loves to play video games with friends and learn music from others whether that is in a formal setting or informal setting. He also enjoys playing Roleplaying games such as Dungeons and Dragons with friends.

Nicholas has been a big part of his high-school marching band as he was the loading captain for his senior year in high school as well as achieving first chair in the high school white band on bassoon for the annual Alabama All-State Conference. He has also made it to the Alabama High School All-State every year of his high school career as well as making it to the top ensemble his freshman year.

He has also been playing music and music has been a part of his life since he was six when he started playing the guitar. He hopes that his musical career will continue as he develops more as a musician in these next couple of years of his life while he pursues a degree in Music Teaching and Learning.

Cooper Taylor

Cooper Taylor is pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Bassoon Performance at Arizona State University (ASU). Originally from Glendale, Arizona, Cooper graduated from Mountain Ridge High School (MRHS) and acted as the principal bassoonist of the MRHS Wind Ensemble for four years, performing at the 2023 Music For All (MFA) National Concert Band Festival and the 2023 International Tuba Euphonium Conference. Cooper also acted as drum major and bassoon soloist of the MRHS marching band, winning two state championships and division 4A class champions of the 2022 Bands of America Arizona Regional competition.

Cooper’s other performance experiences include’s MFA’s 2023 Honor Band of America and four years in the Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestras (PYSO). While in PYSO, Cooper achieved third place in their 2023 Young Musician’s Competition. During the Summers, Cooper participates in music festivals, most notably the Tanglewood Institute Bassoon Workshop, and UNCSA’s Chamber Music Academy of Southern Germany.

When not actively engaged in bassoon or marching band, Cooper frequently lifts weights, reads, and plays board games for fun.

Siraj Soliman

Siraj Soliman is a freshman from Tempe, AZ who is majoring in animation. He is currently playing in the Scottsdale Community College Woodwind Quartet and has participated in many years of the All-State and All-Region festivals, as well as marching band and Wind Ensemble at his high school, McClintock High. On the side he loves art, creating, blacksmithing, lifting weights, and watching TV shows and movies.

Sonya Viquesney

Sonya Viquesney is a freshman at Arizona State University pursuing a degree in bassoon performance. As a lifetime Phoenix resident, she has experience working in several large and small ensembles around the valley. A graduate of Arizona School for the Arts, she played bassoon for 6 years and was the principal bassoonist in the Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestra for 4 years. She participated in the All region festival for 4 years and was first bassoonist for 3 of those years. In the future, she plans to pursue the bassoon as a career and join the Phoenix Symphony, as well as several other small ensembles.

Travis Williams

Travis Williams is a third-year undergraduate student studying music therapy with a focus on bassoon. Travis is originally from Bushkill, Pennsylvania, and moved to Arizona to study with Dr. Albie Micklich at Arizona State University (ASU). Before moving to Arizona, Travis made top ensembles including Pennsylvania Music Education Association’s (PMEA) All-State Band, PMEA All-State Orchestra and National Association for Music Education’s (NAfME) All-Eastern Orchestra.

Since being at ASU, Travis has played in both the ASU Wind Symphony, ASU Philharmonia, ASU Symphony Orchestra, and the “Breakfast Club” woodwind quartet. Along with large ensemble performances, Travis has also done elective recitals and performances at ASU and in the valley.

Travis plans on finishing his Bachelor of Music at ASU and continuing on to become a board-certified music therapist with the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA). When not learning new repertoire, Travis enjoys hiking and exploring the world.
